A man walked onstage in a crowded nightclub during a rock concert and opened fire, killing at least four people and wounding at least two others before he was shot to death by police.
Members of the heavy metal band Damageplan had just begun their first song Wednesday night at the Alrosa Villa when the man opened fire on the band, initially shooting the guitarist, who went by the name "Dimebag" Darrel Abbott, witnesses said.
According to the band's Web site, the guitarist and another member are formerly of the heavy metal band Pantera.
The gunman opened fire on band members, killing four people and wounding at least two others, said Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull, adding that more people could have been shot and left the scene before authorities arrived. Mull said that after shooting at members of the band, the gunman fired into the crowd.
Mull said a police officer arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting began, and he shot and killed the gunman.
Mull wouldn't confirm the identities of the victims.
Witnesses say the shooting occurred about 30 seconds after Damageplan had begun playing.
Other members of Damageplan include vocalist Patrick Lachman and bass player Bob Zilla, according to the band's Web site.
Pantera, known for its brutally hard, fast and aggressive sound, recorded four albums between 1990 and 1996. They attracted a massive cult following and the band's third release, "Far Beyond Driven," debuted at No. 1 in 1994, surprising chart-watchers and critics alike.

Response and Condolences from Bizarre Abyss located in Columbus, Ohio
I was woke up this morning (12/9/04) by my alarm clock's radio announcing the horrible news that there was a shooting just down the street from me, at the Alrosa Villa. Still somewhat sleeping I heard the announcer say that the shooting that occurred killed 5 innocent people but also a member of the band DamagePlan. At that point I sat up in bed, as did my "ole' man", and turned up the volume. The news to your left was repeated and to our horror we found ourselves rushing to the television.
It is with great sorrow that Bizarre Abyss, and I personally, SteelWidow, offer our condolences to the band, DamagePlan, Pantera, and to the families of all of the victims that were killed at Alrosa Villa.
Why would someone just charge into a club and start rampaging around with a semi-automatic weapon, and start shooting people? It's beyond us, and rest of the good citizens of our city. However, this is what the news people aren't telling you. Columbus is seething with crime, gangs, and fucked up people.
We've been counting and for the last 2 weeks someone has been killed or murdered on our side of town almost nightly. We knew it was pretty bad where we reside but man! Enough is enough already and then all this happening at Alrosa Villa is just the icing on the cake. (not that anyone can do anything about it mind you)
Just recently I went to see Marilyn Manson at the Promo West here in Columbus. An awesome show, but today I was thinking that this could have been me. I mean the way it went down. People get checked on the way in but anything can happen. Have we come to the point that facilities have and must install metal detectors at the doors in order to keep everyone safe? Just blocks from where I reside is another club that I used to frequent. New measures for them are to not let any of the men that enter wear any type of hats, coats, gang colors, or large drooping clothing. Women can wear what they want. So guys, you have to freeze your ass off to get in.
Also in our city, within the last year, two al qaeda members were found and arrested for planning terrorist activites. Also up the street is a hang-out called the Sports Cafe. There are no women in there and it looks like an al qaeda hang-out. They all wear the same thing pretty much and everytime I drive by there are guys just sitting in there. What are they doing? Has anyone bothered to ask? You say I shouldn't stero-type? Bullshit! Everyone does.
While news is reporting the crimes, no one is reporting on a solution for the crimes and/or the height of crimes on our end of the city.
My suggestions? If you're pissed off enough to walk in and shoot someone, I suggest taking a valume and calling it a night. Tomorrow will get better. If you're an establishment then install metal detectors and check people out at the door. Start stereo-typing! Sometimes people are what they seem. Follow your senses! If you feel you're in danger, you very well might be! Don't act like a victim and you won't become one. Know the people around you and your surroundings, don't be an idiot and put yourself in bad situations. If someone you love suggests that you stay in tonight, do it. Have patience. Don't be a dick! Protect your personal space. Listen rather than running your mouth.
Bands that come to Columbus - your managers, ahread of time, should be finding out what type of area in Columbus that you're playing in. They should probably be doing this in every city that you visit. This can happen anywhere, anytime, unfortunately. You should refuse to play in venues that don't have the security that your band needs.
